Comparison of The Design Concepts

Here, we compare the concepts of various digital stethoscopes by illustrating how each design retains or modifies the fundamental principles of a traditional stethoscope. Traditional stethoscopes use a chestpiece to pick up sounds and transmit them to the earpieces via tubes.

  • Traditional Stethoscope:
how a stethoscope works

In a traditional stethoscope, the chestpiece picks up sounds, which are then transmitted to the earpieces via tubes.

  • Littmann 3200 Electronic Stethoscope:
the concept of littmann 3200 electronic stethoscope

The Littmann 3200 electronic stethoscope replaces the traditional chestpiece with a piezoelectric sensor, signal processing hardware and a speaker. The sensor picks up auscultation sounds and converts them into electrical signals. The signal processing hardware filters, and amplifies them, and then the sounds are played through the speaker. These sounds are transmitted to the ears via tubes, similar to traditional stethoscopes.

  • Thinklabs One Digital Stethoscope:
the concept of thinklabs one digital stethoscope

With the above concept, there could be a question: After converting sounds to electrical signals, why not use traditional wired earphones as speakers? Thinklabs One includes a standard earphone jack, allowing the use of wired earphones to listen to the sounds. Traditional tubes and earpieces are eliminated.

  • Littmann Core Digital Stethoscope:
the concept of littmann core digital stethoscope

Unlike the Littmann 3200, the Littmann Core digital stethoscope retains a traditional stethoscope chestpiece to pick up sounds. Users can choose the integrated model, which includes a traditional Littmann stethoscope, or use their own stethoscope with the Eko Core attachment. The Core attachment includes a microphone that converts sounds into electrical signals, which are then filtered, amplified, and played through a speaker in the attachment. These sounds are transmitted to the ears via tubes, like traditional stethoscopes or Littmann 3200 electronic stethoscope.

  • Eko Core 500 Digital Stethoscope:
the concept of eko core 500 digital stethoscope

The Eko Core 500 digital stethoscope integrates the chestpiece and audio processing unit, similar to the Littmann 3200 electronic stethoscope. However, it moves the speakers much closer to the earpieces and also integrates an ECG into its chestpiece for added functionality. There are still thick tubes, which makes it more like a traditional stethoscope.

  • Stemoscope PRO Digital Stethoscope:
the concept of stemoscope pro digital stethoscope

Stemoscope PRO addresses the question of whether it's necessary to reinvent earpieces, given the popularity of high-quality wireless earbuds. It is the first and currently the only stethoscope that directly pairs with wireless earbuds, such as Apple AirPods Pro. This design provides maximum compactness, portability and untethered freedom. More importantly, this can use the unique personalized amplification function of AirPods Pro. Recently approved by the FDA as hearing aids, AirPods Pro 2 offer tailored amplification that adjusts to each user's specific hearing needs. This makes Stemoscope PRO unique, as it pairs with AirPods Pro 2 to amplify only the frequencies where you need assistance. This targeted approach ensures healthcare professionals can focus on vital body sounds without being overwhelmed by unnecessary noise. Unlike traditional amplified stethoscopes that amplify everything equally, Stemoscope PRO + AirPods Pro 2 provide clear, personalized sound, improving diagnostic accuracy.

  • Stemoscope II Digital Stethoscope:

Compared to the Stemoscope PRO, the Stemoscope II transmits sounds to the DrStemo app running on a phone. Users can listen to the sounds using earphones connected to the phone. This Bluetooth functionality is similar to that of the Littmann Core Digital Stethoscope and Eko Core 500 Digital Stethoscope.

Based on the comparison, the Stemoscope PRO digital stethoscope stands out as a remarkable choice for those seeking a blend of innovation and convenience. With its slim and compact dimensions (diameter: 42mm, height: 12mm) and lightweight design (56g), it offers unparalleled portability. A thinner device is more comfortable to carry in a pocket, as it reduces bulk and avoids creating a noticeable bulge. The small height design also makes the Stemoscope PRO capable to be used as a precordial stethoscope. The use of medical-grade stainless steel ensures durability and hygiene, making it suitable for professional medical environments. If aluminum was used instead of stainless steel, the manufacturing cost could be reduced by more than 15%! Most high quality traditional stethoscopes are also made of stainless steel because of its excellent acoustic performance. A standout feature of the Stemoscope PRO is its advanced connectivity options. It supports both Bluetooth Classic and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), allowing for direct pairing with wireless earbuds and seamless connection to smartphones. This makes it an excellent choice for healthcare professionals who value the flexibility of wireless listening and the ease of integrating with mobile devices.

The Stemoscope II is a versatile stethoscope that supports Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), similar to the Littmann Core digital stethoscope and Eko Core 500 digital stethoscope. With BLE, you will need to use a phone and the accompanying app to bridge the Stemoscope II to your wireless earphones. Despite this, the Stemoscope II is very affordable. If you don’t frequently use a Bluetooth stethoscope but want to experience wireless technology and make some recordings, the Stemoscope II is an excellent choice. It has also become the first digital stethoscope for many medical and nursing students.

* Our amplification claim is based on the range of the lowest gain and highest gain settings. The lack of a clear baseline for amplification claims in digital stethoscopes can be confusing. Without specifying whether the amplification is compared to a traditional stethoscope (if a traditional stethoscope, what brand or model), the earphone model used in testing, the device's own lowest volume or gain, or another standard, it's difficult to gauge the true extent of the amplification. Additionally, the output power of the earphones and the presence of an amplifier and digital-to-analog converter (DAC) inside most wireless earphones do play a significant role in the overall amplification and sound quality. These factors can vary significantly between different earphone models and brands, further complicating the comparison. When evaluating the amplification claims of digital stethoscopes, it's important to consider these variables and how they might impact your experience. Testing the stethoscope with your preferred earphones in a real-world setting can provide a more accurate assessment of its amplification capabilities and sound quality. This hands-on approach can help you determine whether the device meets your needs and expectations.

    Hello,

I have been perusing the stemoscope website and couldn’t find any information on whether the Stemoscope PRO is cleared for use on neonate and/or pediatric patients or if there are attachments available for examining non-adult patients? I would like more information on this in case the Stemoscope PRO might be suitable for my needs.

    Hi Nick,

Thank you for sharing your experience and concerns. We understand that battery life and replacement are crucial factors when investing in medical equipment. The Stemoscope PRO is designed with a long-lasting battery that supports extended use, typically much longer than 2-3 years under normal usage conditions.

I have had the EKO Core for some time – until the battery wore out and I discovered that it is not replaceable. I haven’t replaced it for that reason (too expensive to have device which has to be completely bought again after 2-3 years. My regular tubed stethoscopes cost less and have on average lasted 10-15 years or more. If the Stemoscope has the same inadequate battery life and the battery cannot be replaced that is a major flaw and big reason not to spend $300?

    Hi MarlaAnne,

Thank you for asking! For personal health monitoring, a Stemoscope II digital stethoscope should be sufficient. You can listen to and record heart or lung sounds with the DrStemo app.

    Regards,
    Stemoscope Team
